This past weekend, many women and men around the U.S gathered on Saturday, January 21, 2017, the day after the inauaguartion to voice their concerns about our newly elected president, Donald Trump. As a Washingtonian, I attended the Washington, DC’s march. Initially, 200,000 attendees were expected, but they are now estimating over 1,000,000 attendees who marched to the White House !! The momentum is so strong there’s already talks of another march to take place April 15, 2017. If you have never attended a rally, protest or march then you may not understand, but this was such an amazing and exhilarating experience ! There nothing like women coming together, putting their differences aside and fighting for what’s naturally ours. Most marched for similar reasons, and some for just one specific issue that they felt was endangered. I marched for equality for women across the board, disabled americans, minorities who struggle day-to-day just to get by; the list could go on, but these were my top reasons for #whyimarch. Below, I have listed my favorite quotes that I feel are very inspiring and motivational. Did you attend or wanted to attend a march in one the sister cities? If so, share your thoughts below.
1.“[Women] must seek leadership positions, and support other women who do the same. Until we make it normal to have at least half, if not more, of our leaders be female, we will be serving, and with our taxes financing, a government that believes it’s within their domain to make decisions for our future.” – Natalie Portman
2.“The president is not America. His cabinet is not America. Congress is not America. We are America. And we are here to stay. We will not go from being a nation of immigrants to a nation of ignorance.” –America Ferrera
3.“Continue to embrace the things that make you unique, even if it makes others uncomfortable. You are enough. Whenever you feel in doubt, whenever you want to give up, you must always remember to choose freedom over fear.” –Janelle Monae
4. “We are linked. We are not ranked. And this is a day that will change us forever because we are together. Each of us individually and collectively will never be the same again. When we elect a possible president we too often go home. We’ve elected an impossible president, we’re never going home. We’re staying together. And we’re taking over.” –Gloria Steinem
